John Whaite, winner of BBC2’s The Great British Bake-Off, has just launched his second book. It’s packed with more than 120 recipes, which, as the title suggests, can be used to bake ‘At Home’.

It’s a dream come true for John, who told us: “My life is completely immersed in food. I live and breathe it. I’m constantly thinking of new recipes. And I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t what I wanted to do as a career.”

John was crowned baking champ in the popular BBC TV show back in 2012 and his feet haven’t touched the ground since. He finished his law degree, attended the Cordon Bleu pastry school, ran his own cooking courses, has appeared on numerous shows as a guest chef and even bagged a regular column in Heat magazine – this is one committed cook!

But enough about his fabulous new career, let’s get some gossip from the set. “We filmed every weekend for 10 weeks. We’d go down to Somerset for the Friday night and we’d usually all go out for dinner or drinks. Then we’d be up at 5.30am so filming could start on the Saturday morning at 7.30am and the same on the Sunday. We’d film for about 12 to 14 hours and then we’d go back to our day-to-day lives in the week. For me, I was doing a degree at the same time so it was a kind of a respite, a break. But it was also an intense period of time and during the filming you go through so many emotions. People think it’s just a bit of baking but there were the highest highs and there were lows. I’m still in touch with other contestants. And the genuine friendship I’ve now got with Cat Dresser is probably the best thing to come from this whole experience.”

When we asked him if it’s what he was meant to do, he said: “I think you are given opportunities in life and you make what you will of them. If you have a passion in life, you should go for it.” Finally, will he be watching this year’s Great British Bake Off? “Absolutely! I can’t wait for the show to start. It’s great to watch and not be so emotionally involved!”
