How you can help a young LGBT person in crisis this summer

How you can help a young LGBT person in crisis this summer
Posted by James Hood

You may already know that Outlet has been a long-time supporter of Albert Kennedy Trust. The not-for-profit organisation helps find emergency or safe accommodation for young LGBT people aged 16 to 25 who have been made homeless or are in crisis.

As a company that started out 20 years ago to help the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people find homes where they could be themselves, we’re happy at Outlet to have found a charity that shares our values.

We’ve made a promise to give people less to worry about and more reasons to smile. And we feel that the Albert Kennedy Trust is just as committed to this cause as we are. The trust organises fundraising events all year round, but during the summer months there are even more opportunities for you to get involved and help raise some much needed cash. Here’s what’s coming up:

Sky dives
All year round

These take place all year round, but are especially fun on a clear summer’s day. The tandem jumps take place at locations across the whole country. Registration is from £70 per person, but if you raise the minimum of £395 AKT will refund the registration fee. You can find out more info and watch a video here.

London to Paris Bike Ride
July 2016

This 295 mile bike ride takes place across four days. The route takes you through the lovely Kent countryside to Dover before crossing the Channel to Calais. You’ll then follow tranquil French country lanes, go through traditional market towns with views of the rolling, green fields of Northern France, passing the war memorials and cemeteries of the Somme. The pièce de résistance of this cycle challenge will be the final cycle up the Champs Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe, following in the tyre tracks of the cycling greats, before watching them cycle the same route the next day in the finale of the Tour de France! The entry fee for booking is £99 with a requested minimum sponsorship of £1,470. Find out more, including detailed information about each day, here.

The Vitality British 10K
10 July 2016

Thousands of runners choose this 10k route for fundraising every year for its stunning route through London. You’ll start near Green Park, passing the iconic Ritz, before whizzing through Mayfair, Piccadilly and past landmarks such as Big Ben and Trafalgar Square. With a light-hearted atmosphere and a combination of abilities, this is a fun run – jog, race or even walk the route and enjoy a slap up meal somewhere central afterwards. There’s a £50 entry fee. Buy some Outlet furniture
24/7

At Outlet we have our own range of furniture, home accessories and white goods, in association with David Phillips. You’ll find everything you could need to kit out a stylish home. The team will delivery fast – and even remove old, unwanted furniture and assemble the new items. We donate every single penny of Outlet’s commission from furniture sales to Albert Kennedy Trust. Take a look here.

Organise your own event
If you want to help this amazing charity but aren’t really the active or daredevil type, you can still raise funds your own way. Wherever you work, you can help by organising what AKT calls a ‘Purple Day’. It works in a similar way to a typical fundraising day at the office – where you can charge people for wearing casual-Friday clothes, selling cakes or just walking round the building with a collection bucket. Make sure you clear it with the boss first though. Want to organise something a little close to home? Why not host a bash at your home, organise a dinner or cocktail party and raise funds in a sociable setting?

Donate some money
Of course, a simple and easy donation to Albert Kennedy Trust is very much appreciated by the charity any time of year. You can do that using the ‘donate’ link on the charity’s home page, here.

Outlet was the originial LGBT property company in London. Established in 1995, the company helped lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people find a home where they could be themselves. Today, although times have changed, we still do our bit to make sure people can live in a safe, happy and lovely home. Our heritage inspires our mission today - to give people less to worry about and more reasons to smile.

Give Outlet a call if we can help you with anything property related such as property management, property sales or lettings in London. We can also help you with lets with pets. Call 020 7287 4244 and one of our friendly team will be happy to help.
