Why we're celebrating LGBT History Month

Why we're celebrating LGBT History Month
Posted by Josh Rafter

As a business that always values people’s uniqueness (we’re not sure that’s a word but we’re going to use it anyway), we’re celebrating LGBT History Month!

Yes, true story, February is officially LGBT History Month. And it’s a time for us all to reflect on the struggles of LGBT people over the last few decades. It’s been a difficult road for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Men and women were persecuted in the 60s simply for being different to others. Then the HIV epidemic in the 80s and 90s tested the strength of the community once again. Even today, young people are being bullied at school simply for being attracted to someone of the same sex.

But it’s not only the trying times that make LGBT History Month so important. It’s also a chance for us to celebrate triumphs such as decriminalisation, lowering the age of consent, and the right to marry. Of course we must also take this opportunity to acknowledge the amazing work that people have done to give those LGBT people among us a chance to live their best life. Support groups, volunteers, activists and even people who just showed a little kindness all deserve remembering this month.

We’ve always been fearless supporters of the LGBT community at Outlet. In fact, our business was founded on the belief that EVERYONE deserves a safe place to live, no matter what their background, race, gender or sexuality.

So we’ll be out in Soho raising a glass of something sparkling at some point this month. We’ll toast LGBT History and those who paved the way for us to live our lives so fabulously today.
