A big bash is about to be thrown to celebrate LGBT charity RUComingOut and the great work it does in the community.
Back in 2012, Wayne Dhesi (pictured above with editor James Ingham) was working as a mental health youth worker for the NHS when a 17 year old boy came out as gay to him in a one-to-one session. Wayne had been out himself for ten years but struggled to signpost the teenager to places where he could get support and encouragement without having to come out again. By sharing his own personal coming out journey with the 17 year old, Wayne was able to make him feel that he was not alone and that things would get better. Fast forward a few months and in March 2012 RUComingOut.com was born.
The idea of the website was to share real life coming out stories in a hope to inspire and support those were who struggling with their own sexuality or gender identity. The website was a massive success with close to half a million visitors from over 150 countries across the world and now contains over 300 real life stories.
The website has been supported by some big names such as Cheryl Cole, Mel B, Lulu, Olly Alexander, Adam Lambert and Jake Shears. It has a regular feature in Attitude Magazine and has featured on ITV’s This Morning and BBC Radio 1. Wayne himself was listed as the 15th most influential LGBTI person in Britain in last year’s Independent on Sunday Rainbow List for his work on RUComingOut. Four years on from its creation, RUComingOut has just been granted official charity status.
To celebrate, Wayne is hosting a special launch event at legendary gay venue The Royal Vauxhall Tavern (RVT) in South London on the evening of Thursday 21 April 2016. Last year’s summer party was a sell-out event and attracted well known faces such as Alesha Dixon, Marcus Collins, Charlie Condou, Gabrielle and Joe McElderry.
Tickets to the official charity launch are available now priced £20 / £25 and are selling fast! The evening (hosted by Andrew Hayden-Smith) will feature an acoustic set from Dan Gillespie Sells from The Feeling, a special performance from Drag Queen Asifa Lahore and an exclusive DJ set from Munroe Bergdorf plus some very special guests.
